In plain terms

The law explicitly prohibits any intervention for minor internet addiction that infringes upon a child's physical or mental health. In Hefei, an unregulated boot camp handcuffed a newly admitted teenage boy inside a solitary confinement room; he died roughly 44 hours later. In Nanchang, the Yuzhang Shuyuan academy placed youth into solitary confinement rooms; multiple operators were convicted of unlawful detention crimes, while parental claims seeking tuition refunds were rejected by the court.

Cost: what it takes

Zero financial cost—and saves substantial tuition fees. The real friction is psychological: when conflict peaks at home, parents must resist the impulse to outsource discipline to unregulated coercive institutions.

Benefit: what the source reports

Article 68 of the Law on the Protection of Minors strictly provides: "No organization or individual may intervene in minor internet addiction by methods that infringe upon the physical and psychological health of minors." Two representative legal precedents illustrate the grave consequences: First, in Hefei, Anhui (August 2017), parents signed an agreement with a private training academy to treat their 18-year-old son's internet addiction. Academy staff forcibly transported the youth to the facility, locked him in a solitary confinement room, handcuffed both wrists to window security bars, deprived him of adequate food, water, and rest, and subjected him to physical beatings. The young man died approximately 44 hours later. Forensic examination concluded that death resulted from electrolyte imbalance precipitated by high ambient temperatures, forced physical restriction, starvation, and blunt trauma. On October 31, 2018, the Hefei Intermediate People's Court convicted the principal operator of intentional injury and unlawful detention, sentencing him to 16 years of imprisonment, while four drill instructors received sentences ranging from 1 to 8.5 years. On December 28, 2018, the Anhui Provincial Higher People's Court affirmed the verdict on appeal, noting that the school operated without administrative licensing and none of the defendants held teaching qualifications. Second, in Nanchang, Jiangxi, the Yuzhang Shuyuan academy operated from 2013 until its cancellation in November 2017. During operation, staff subjected enrolled students to solitary confinement in windowless detention rooms under guard for periods ranging from 3 to 10 days. On April 28, 2023, the Anyuan District People's Court of Pingxiang City sentenced five defendants for unlawful detention, imposing prison terms of up to 2 years and 10 months and occupational bans; civil claims by parents seeking tuition and travel refunds were dismissed.

Conditions, limits and disagreements

Evidence grade is C because documentation relies on judicial case precedents and investigative reporting rather than systemic epidemiology tracking total adverse casualty rates across private bootcamps. If a child engages in extensive gaming, first evaluate whether sleep, academic coursework, and outdoor recreation are being crowded out per Chapter 30, Rule 14. If grades, sleep hygiene, and family relationships deteriorate concurrently and rational discussions fail, schedule an evaluation with a pediatric psychiatric or child psychological clinic for clinical assessment and evidence-based behavioral care. If a minor is currently placed in an enclosed disciplinary boot camp, withdraw them immediately. If the child reports confinement, assault, or physical punishment, report the facility to emergency police (110). Beneficiaries are the children.
