In plain terms
High-pressure selling and scams try to obtain payment before reflection. Experiments found greater interest in misleading offers after emotional arousal, with older participants more interested than younger ones. Rehearse a simple response with an older relative: 'I need to discuss this with my family.' It provides a way to leave the pressure and decide later.

Cost: what it takes
No cost at all. It only takes a few minutes to discuss this with the senior once.
Benefit: what the source reports
The US FTC describes pressure to act before thinking, including demands to stay on a call to prevent verification, and recommends discussing a proposal with a trusted person before acting. A 2021 warning from China's banking and insurance regulator similarly advises older adults to consult family before buying financial products. One experiment included 116 adults aged 65–85 and 115 aged 30–40; a win/loss game induced emotional arousal before misleading advertisements were shown. Aroused participants expressed greater purchase interest, and older participants expressed greater interest regardless of arousal. The authors recommended waiting until emotions settle before financial decisions. Another experiment with previous mail-fraud victims, mostly older adults, found that almost half of those not forewarned immediately accepted a simulated fraudulent sales call; advance warning two to four weeks earlier significantly reduced immediate acceptance. A rehearsed deferral phrase is the author's practical application.
Conditions, limits and disagreements
B: neither experiment tested this exact phrase or measured losses prevented by rehearsing it. One tested purchase interest under arousal, the other advance warning. Use it with item 3's spending arrangement. Home fall prevention is covered in section 1. The phrase gives the older person a socially workable exit rather than treating them with suspicion; refusing in a room full of salespeople can be harder than recognizing a dubious claim.
