In plain terms
Toxoplasmosis is caused by an intracellular parasite. Primary infection acquired during pregnancy can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe congenital ocular and neurological damage in the infant. However, living with a domestic cat does not increase the risk of infection, and there is no medical reason to rehome family cats. The primary routes of transmission are consuming undercooked meat, eating unwashed produce, or touching contaminated garden soil. Simply delegate litter box duty to someone else and change it daily.

Cost: what it takes
Zero monetary cost. Have another household member scoop the litter box daily. If you must clean it yourself, use disposable gloves. The willpower challenge is ensuring all meat consumed is cooked thoroughly and skipping rare steaks or cured charcuterie.
Benefit: what the source reports
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the UK National Health Service (NHS), newly acquired maternal toxoplasmosis infection shortly before or during pregnancy can transmit vertically to the fetus. While many congenitally infected newborns appear asymptomatic at birth, untreated infants frequently develop chorioretinitis, blindness, or intellectual disability later in life, and a subset present at birth with severe hydrocephalus, microcephaly, or intracranial calcifications. In a multicenter cohort of 603 pregnant women with confirmed toxoplasma infection, mother-to-child transmission averaged 29% overall (95% CI 25%–33%), rising from 6% at 13 weeks of gestation to 72% at 36 weeks, with fetal clinical damage peaking when infection occurred between 24 and 30 weeks (approximately 10% risk of severe early clinical manifestations). In a landmark 6-center European case-control study (Cook et al., BMJ), domestic cat ownership was not associated with increased risk of acute maternal infection (OR 1.0, 95% CI 0.7–1.5), and cleaning litter boxes showed no statistically significant excess risk (OR 1.3, 95% CI 0.8–2.1). In contrast, consuming undercooked lamb or beef increased risk more than threefold (OR 3.13, 95% CI 1.4–7.2), and soil contact increased risk by 81% (OR 1.81, 95% CI 1.2–2.7). Between 30% and 63% of acute infections in European cities were attributable to undercooked or cured meat, and 6% to 17% to soil exposure. CDC and NHS clinical protocols specify that pregnant women should delegate litter cleaning to another person. If unavoidable, wear disposable gloves and wash hands thoroughly with soap. Litter boxes must be emptied daily, as Toxoplasma oocysts in feline feces require 1 to 5 days to become infectious. Pregnant women should avoid acquiring new cats or handling stray kittens, keep household cats indoors, and feed them commercial cooked or canned food rather than raw meat.
Conditions, limits and disagreements
Cats shed oocysts only for a brief 1- to 3-week window following their initial infection; adult indoor cats previously exposed rarely shed again. An indoor cat fed commercial pet food has virtually zero risk of contracting or shedding the parasite. Conversely, households without pets frequently contract toxoplasmosis from raw or undercooked meat, unwashed raw vegetables, contaminated garden soil, or untreated water. Essential preventative behaviors: cook whole cuts of meat and ground meats to safe internal temperatures; wash cutting boards, knives, and hands thoroughly after handling raw meat; rinse all fruits and vegetables under running water; wear gloves when gardening or handling soil, followed by handwashing. The NHS also cautions against consuming dry-cured meats (e.g., salami, Parma ham) unless cooked, and avoiding unpasteurized goat milk. Consult your obstetrician regarding toxoplasma antibody screening (TORCH panel) during prenatal care. Benefit magnitude is categorized as Moderate based on preserving family companion animals while preventing severe fetal neurological injury. Primary beneficiaries are yourself and your child.
